Akron, Ohio can claim to be the birth place of the manufactured toy industry. In 1883, The Akron Toy Company began manufacturing toy marbles and marketing them to children of all economic backgrounds. This enterprise was such as success, by 1929, there were more than 100 toy companies operating within 30 miles of Akron, Ohio. In 1902, these toy company leaders founded the first toy trade association to help market their products to foreign markets.
